TOPIC: where do expats actually go at night?

where do expats actually go at night? 3 years 2 months ago #161

This sounds like a stupid question, but I am wondering where expats go at night. I know that I throw on lots of information on bars and restaurants, but I am curious as to which places certain people like to hang out at.

That depends on your tastes etc. I might be a little biased ;) but if you are looking for somewhere you can chat, enjoy good food, and appreciate classic rock music that does not deafen you, drop in to Bluesky in Shanghai Lu. I have been known to be there from time to time!

Well I personally prefer the friendly and cozy environment at Finnegans Wake, the right amount of people, the right level of music, the enjoyable crowd. It just feels right ;)

I agree with both of you - those two bars are excellent but I think I prefer a little live music from time to time, so Finnegan's Wake has the edge, maybe. I have been to Behind the Wall but in winter, so it wasn't too representative of a Mexican Cantina. It needs warmth to bring out those great colours.
Ask me again in autumn. We intend to check out all those interesting bars and restaurants in the 'black cover' guide book/map, but I prefer to venture out at night in less than five layers of clothing. Meanwhile, thank God for copy DVD's, a big TV and cheese toasties!

There are a few of decent places. There is usually a good crowd at Don Quixote's and the music is decent (although it an be a bit loud).

If you're new in town, the people at Jimmy's are usually friendly. You can almost certainly leave there with at least one new friend.
